Job Description – Gutchess Lumber Co
Title: Forest Technician
Reports to: Wood Procurement Manager: Eastern Region
Based at:   Canaan, NY
Job purpose:
Your responsibilities in this position will include the scaling and grading of gatewood timber and logs, assistance in marketing and the sale of logs not bound for Gutchess Lumber Co., (GLC) facilities, storage of logs, loading and unloading of trucks, data collection and data transfer, environmental and regulatory compliance, job safety, control and maintenance of GLC wood concentration areas, equipment and property. Of course, GLC reserves the right to change your job duties and to assign to you other job duties, from time to time, commensurate with your education, training, and experience.  
 Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
1. Accurate Scale and Grade of all logs received into the GLC yard.
a. Selling of all logs: veneer, sawlogs, pulp, etc.
b. Rolling stock
i. Safe operation of all equipment including chainsaws, wheel loader, hydraulic cranes
ii. Understand regular maintenance
c. Environmental
i. Understand and comply with all SWPPP plans.
ii. Understand and comply with GLC spill procedures
2. Purchasing
a. Monitor Log yard receipts for quality on a daily basis.
b. Report to Wood Procurement Manager quality challenges
c. Purchasing timber and logs as needed
3. Daily tracking of receipts into Log yard
a. Match scale loads to BOL (Bill of Lading)
b. Ensure all data is transferred to Cortland timely and accurately.
4. Weekly tracking of Log sales
a. Ensure all data is transferred to Cortland timely and accurately.
b. Vendor and harvester information by load, log, and sale number
Training Requirements:
Entry-level forestry technician positions require, at minimum two years of postsecondary education.
These methodological forestry tasks include, applied-knowledge & skills in data recording, instruments, measurements, location, designation, interpretation, inspection, assessment, judgment, planning, monitoring, negotiation, supervision, and written & verbal communication.
The Forestry Technician encompasses a wide range of projects that demand technical jobs engaged in many complex activities, such as: contract inspection, inventory, harvest preparation, timber harvest operations, road building & maintenance, reforestation, site clean-up, tree stand care & thinning, fuel reduction, firefighting, erosion control, protection, habitat improvement, and property survey. Technicians work daily to plan, assess, inspect, measure, layout, direct and monitor projects.
This requires you to perform technically-demanding work outdoors in the forest, and may work alone independently, in pairs, or in small groups. The technician will spend much of the day at ever-changing outdoor locations, walking over forested, rough terrain, and traveling to/from remote forest jobsite.
