Location: Cortland, NY (1st Shift)

As an intern for our Gutchess Lumber Company, you will be primarily responsible for conducting log studies and mill analysis to optimize our operational efficiency and product quality. Your role will involve performing various audits and analyses throughout the log processing and milling stages. Below are the key responsibilities associated with this position:

Log Audits of Opening Face by Grade:

  • Conduct comprehensive audits of the opening face to assess log quality and characteristics.
  • Classify logs based on grade specifications and identify any anomalies or defects.
  • Generate detailed reports summarizing findings and recommendations for improvement.

Grade/Trim/Waste Audits and Reporting:

  • Perform audits on graded lumber, trim materials, and waste products generated during the milling process.
  • Analyze the quality and composition of graded lumber, identifying opportunities for optimization.
  • Evaluate trim and waste materials to minimize production losses and enhance resource utilization.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports outlining audit results, trends, and actionable insights.

Data Analysis and Optimization:

  • Collect, organize, and analyze data related to log studies and mill operations.
  • Identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement to enhance overall efficiency and product quality.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and team members to implement process improvements and best practices.
  • Assist in developing strategies to optimize log utilization, minimize waste, and maximize yield.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, mill operators, and other team members to coordinate audit activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address operational challenges and implement corrective actions.
  • Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to stakeholders in a clear and professional manner.

Continuous Learning and Development:

  • Stay informed about industry best practices, technological advancements, and emerging trends in log processing and milling.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, workshops, and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program (e.g., Forestry, Wood Science, Industrial Engineering, etc.) or graduated.

Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Proficiency in data analysis and report writing.

Knowledge of lumber grading systems and mill operations is preferred but not required.

Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges and responsibilities.
